André Zucca (1897 -1973) was a respected French press photographer. In 1941, Zucca was called by the occupying German army to work on the propaganda magazine Signal. Zucca’s unexpected and rare color images of Paris during that time are surrounded by controversy for presenting Parisian life as sunny and lively, largely undisturbed by the darkness of war. World War II, France: Three cabaret singers wear the latest designer hats at the Longchamp Racecourse, Paris, August 1943 . Many Paris fashion houses closed or moved during the war and the use of fabric for clothing was restricted. Milliners rose in the fashion ranks creating high style from scraps of material that would have otherwise been thrown away, sometimes incorporating butter muslin, bits of paper, and wood shavings. The pink hat is by milliner Rose Valois. The white hat is by Madame Le Monnier and the red hat is by Madame Agnes. Valois, Le Monnier and Agnes were among the most innovative milliners of the time.
